Here It Comes

Blake and I moved to Houston close to three years ago.
Well, Blake moved here four years ago.
We lived in separate states for a year while I finished up school and Blake began his career in Houston.
That's another story for another day, though.

But we've been living here for almost three years.

I remember the day we decided that we were going to move to Houston.
We didn't discuss the decision with anyone until our decision was made.
All that was left was to tell our family and friends.
Needless to say, some were more understanding than others.
We didn't let anything deter us from our choice.

Blake and I moved to Houston because of an opportunity that could not be ignored.
Our choices were:
a) Stay in Oklahoma where Blake would work at a bank.
b) Move to Houston where Blake would work for a company that would pay for a Graduate Education.

We knew that it was the best decision for us.
We knew that any and all sacrifices would be worth it.

My grandfather, who passed away in June of last year, was most pleased with our decision.
He simply stated that because we would be away from everyone and everything we knew, we would only have each other to turn to when things didn't go our way.
His words were comforting and true.

Blake didn't start school right away.
He waited until after our first married year, our first year in Houston before he applied to Rice University.
He was accepted.

Several people told us that this would be the most difficult time of our married lives.
Harder than our previous long distance relationship.
Harder than planning a wedding.
Harder than having children.
I hardly ever saw/see Blake.
He goes to work throughout the week, working late most free nights.
In the evenings and on the weekends, he goes to school.
It has been hard.

Sometime last year, I remember talking with a few teachers that I work with.
I was so excited that he was coming home that night for dinner.
I had made a roast.
But...
Blake never came home.
The roast burned.
The next day when the teachers asked me how my night with Blake was, I cried.

But there it is...
The Light
...at the end of the tunnel.

Blake will graduate in a little over a month.
3 years in Houston,
2 years in school, and
1 completely paid-for MBA.

The reason for our sacrafices,
the goal behind our choice,
the very purpose for the past three years.

We are almost there.
Until then, I'll hold off on the roast.

  1. Way to go, guys! I wish we would've made better decisions regarding our education. We did move away from our families for six years, though, and I think it was one of the best things we could've done for our marriage. It really brought us closer, and cut out all the 'background noise'. Hope you two will be able to have more time together in the near future! ;)
